Obituary: Sir Leslie Murphy

Sir Leslie Murphy, who died on 29 September 2007 aged 91, was an oil executive who became the last Labour-appointed chairman of the National Enterprise Board. He was also a founder-trustee of the SDP.
Sir Leslie worked in the civil service while taking evening classes in Mathematics at Birkbeck, becoming the first external student to achieve a first-class degree. He was made a College Fellow in 1978.
