The Ronald Tress Memorial Lecture is an annual event held in remembrance of Professor Ronald Tress, former Master of Birkbeck and founder of the Department of Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics.

Tress established the Economics Department at Birkbeck and our scholarly community honours his legacy and contribution to the world of economics by inviting a leading figure in the field to speak on the pressing issues affecting society today.

2022

Chris Giles, Economics Editor of the Financial Times: Let's talk about economics

Wednesday 11 May 6-7:30pm

We are delighted to announce that this year we will be joined by our former alumnus Chris Giles, Economics Editor of the Financial Times.

Chris will discuss the communication of economics in the modern world from his position as Economics Editor of the Financial Times. From a dry subject that needed sexing up in the 1990s, through the distortions of Brexit and in today's polarised society, communicating economic thought and debate has become ever more challenging. Chris will highlight what this means for policy makers, academics and journalists.

The Ronald Tress Memorial Lecture 2022 is open to students, alumni, staff, and friends of the Department of Economics, Mathematics, and Statistics. The Lecture is planned to take place in person on Birkbeck Campus.
