Our next, and for the time being, last Sci/Film event will be on the topic of parapsychology and its portrayal in the hugely popular TV 'entertainment' genre of Ghost Hunting shows. We will be joined by experts on both the media representation of ghost hunting, Dr. Cecilia Sayad (Senior Lecturer, Film and Media, University of Kent) and world-renowned expert on parapsychology and investigator of paranormal beliefs, Prof. Christopher French (head of the Anomalistic Psychology Research Unit, Goldsmiths). Our discussion will be structured around various clips of paranormal investigations from TV (e.g. BBC's Ghostwatch, 1992; Paranormal State, 'The Devil of Syracuse', 2007), film (e.g. Poltergeist, Spielberg, 1982) as well as an episode of the genre defining series, Most Haunted (2002-2018).
Please join us for an occasionally scary, occasionally funny but always informative discussion about parapsychology and why we like watching frightened people on shaky nightvision cameras.
This will be our last Sci/Film event due to neither organiser being available next year (due to a sabbatical and a move to UEA) but if you would like the series to return in the future please share your enthusiasm for the series through posts on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/BIMI01SciFilmSeries/
The Sci/Film series is funded by a Wellcome Trust ISSF (Institutional Strategic Support Fund) public engagement grant. BIMI is funded by four schools at Birkbeck: the School of Arts, the School of Law, the School of Social Sciences, History and Philosophy, and the School of Science. The University of Pittsburgh is also a partner and co-funder.
