    Biography

    Dr An Vleugels studied social and cultural European History in Leuven and Barcelona. She is interested in the ways in which 'appropriate behaviour' was culturally constructed and in the role of medicine in the making of modern society. At Birkbeck she teaches a series of courses on the history of medicine, mind and the body, in partnership with Wellcome Collection. She is currently working on a book to be published in the beginning of next year titled Narratives of Drunkenness: Belgium, 1830-1914. Pickering & Chatto, which focuses on the changing idea of drunkenness in culture.
