Delegates from the School of International Business (SIB) Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE) in China visited the School of Business Economics and Informatics (SBEI) on June 22 2011 to agree a Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions. The Chinese delegation included Professor OU Bing Vice President of SWUFE, Professor Jiang Yumei, Executive Dean of SIB, and Dr Zhaohong Lin who was previously a PhD student at Birkbeck with Professor John Kelly and Dr Linda Trenberth. The Delegates met with Professor Philip Powell Executive Dean of SBEI, Dr Linda Trenberth, Professor Xiaming Liu from SBEI, Scott Miller from Registry and David Tupper from the International Office.
SWUFE is the training base for political and economic talent in Southwest China, and is one of the leading institutions for economics and finance education in China. SIB is an important business school with its own unique characteristics in Southwestern China, and has established a wide range of collaboration with more than 10 European and American universities.
To promote comprehensive and sustainable development in western China, SIB has collaborated with Birkbeck through the School of Business, Economics and Informatics and in particular with the Department of Management. It uses SIB’s Executive Development Programme (EDP) Centre as the platform to provide top-level training course in Western China and the collaborative initiative allows for the delivery of Masters/MPhil/ programmes to students from SWUFE-SIB and staff exchanges.
The Programme Collaborations include a Visiting Staff Programme which has already seen two staff from the Department of Management visit and teach at SWUFE. Professor Klaus Nielsen visited SWUFE in December 2010 and Professor Daniele Archibugi in April 2011 and both enjoyed the experience immensely and made a significant contribution to the SWUFE programme. Dr Julian Sims will visit and teach in December 2012.
A Dual-degree has been agreed to where up to 15 selected students from SWUFE will come to London to study at Birkbeck-SBEI for the second year of their SWUFE-SIB Masters Degree during which time they will complete one of the Masters Degree programmes in the Department of Management.
An undergraduate progression has been established and up to 15 selected undergraduates who have completed the SWUFE-SIB Bachelor’s degree and who meet Birkbeck’s entry criteria will be invited to progress onto one of Birkbeck-SBEI taught postgraduate programmes in London.
Birkbeck-SBEI will also collaborate with SWUFE on PhD programmes.
All in all the exchange of ideas between the two parties has been well received on both sides and the School of Business, Economics and Informatics looks forward to a long and productive collaboration with our Chinese colleagues at SWUFE.
