Birkbeck's international outlook highly ranked in new world table
Latest Times Higher Education World University Rankings place Birkbeck in the top third of more than a thousand leading universities, and in the upper reaches for international outlook.
Birkbeck has once again been recognised as one of the top universities globally for its major international showing in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University rankings 2018-19.
Birkbeck has maintained its overall position in the newly-published 15th annual league table, remaining within the top third of more than 1000 leading universities, representing the world’s best institutions.
The rankings use independently-audited measurements, examining 13 performance indicators, arranged in five “pillars”, and are seen as the most comprehensive global university rankings. Universities were ranked according to achievements in teaching, research, citations, industry outcome and international outlook.
Birkbeck is highly ranked for its “international outlook”, figuring in the top 10% of listed universities, based on overseas staff, students and research collaborations.
The recognition comes as the university experiences a 28% increase in applications from international students, compared to last year. For full-time Master’s applications, that figure rises to 32%.
In the latest THE rankings, Birkbeck is placed in the top 350 of the 1258 universities which have been ranked and it is in 40th position out of 98 UK institutions.
For its research, the College is placed in the top quartile, in 297th place internationally, while teaching figures in the top half of all the universities listed. Birkbeck has improved its overall score for four of the five pillars year-on-year, with international outlook remaining static.
Professor Matthew Innes, Vice-Master of Birkbeck, University of London, said: “For Birkbeck to continue to be a highly-regarded international player in the THE World University Rankings is a great achievement and testament to our recruitment and collaborations.
“We continue to swell our international student numbers, especially at postgraduate level, and to retain the talents of our wonderfully diverse international staff.
“Our position overall is an endorsement of the success of Birkbeck and its mission to provide the highest quality research and teaching, which has also brought recognition in the REF and TEF.”
