Eric Hobsbawm Postgraduate Scholarships
Applications are now being accepted for the the newly launched scholarships.
Birkbeck, University of London has launched a new postgraduate Scholarship fund in memory of the College’s former President and one of the greatest historians of the last century: Professor Eric Hobsbawm. The Scholarships will cover the fees and/or research costs of Master’s students in Birkbeck’s Department of History, Classics and Archaeology and will help to address the inequality which is currently a feature of postgraduate study in the UK, about which Hobsbawm felt strongly.
The Eric Hobsbawm Scholarships have been set up to encourage the next generation of talented historians to pursue original, high-quality and exciting research in history and were made possible thanks to many donations from Hobsbawm’s friends and former students. Birkbeck gratefully acknowledges the help and support of the Hobsbawm family.
Professor John Arnold, Head of the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology, said: “During his 65 years at Birkbeck, Eric inspired hundreds of students and colleagues through his work and teaching. These scholarships, aimed at making postgraduate study available to the most talented students, regardless of money, are a highly suitable legacy.”
The Eric Hobsbawm Scholarship Fund will provide two full fee-waiver scholarships for Master’s study as well as providing financial assistance for research expenses for new and existing doctoral students.
The deadline for applications is 28 February 2014. For more information see the Department of History, Classics and Archaeology website.
