Overview

Biography

Jason holds degrees from the University of Oxford and the University of London. He started teaching at Birkbeck in 1997 while studying for his PhD. He became a permanent member of staff in the Department of Politics in 2003. He has been a Visiting Fellow/ Lecturer at the University of Melbourne (2005) and the University of Copenhagen (2014). Since 2020 he has been Assistant Dean for Education in the School of Social Sciences, History, and Philosophy at Birkbeck.

Research interests

• Contemporary political and social theory, particularly problems of democratic theory
• Food and politics, particularly the relevance of food to social and political theory
• Issues in the philosophy of the social sciences
• The history of social and political thought, particularly with reference to Hobbes, Arendt, and Foucault

Research overview

I've written on democratic theory. At a more abstract level, I'm interested in questions about the constitution of democratic subjectivity in modern societies, and in particular the role of material spaces in shaping our ideas of democratic conduct.
