Our body is the most familiar object we encounter. We know it like the back of our hand. Or do we?
Recent findings have shown that in many situations the brain appears to maintain remarkably distorted and
impoverished representations of the body. In the BodyLab, our research investigates the psychological and
neural mechanisms by which we form representations of our body, and how these representations affect all
aspects of our mental lives.
The BodyLab is part of the Mace Experimental Research Laboratories in Neuroscience (MERLiN) in the
Department of Psychological Sciences at
Birkbeck, University of London.
