Term date exceptions
Students on full-time taught master's degrees (including MRes) and some Postgraduate Diplomas are required to study for a full calendar year. They are expected to continue working on their dissertation or final project beyond the College's Summer term, specifically between the end of the Summer term and the beginning of the Autumn term. Vacation periods are limited to the Easter and Christmas breaks. This applies to programmes starting in both October and January.
Research students are required to be in continued attendance throughout the year, except during the Christmas and Easter closing periods. Research students can work full-time after completing their PhD while their Student visa is valid. Completing the PhD means that you have done all of the following:
- submitted your thesis
- completed your viva examination
- completed and submitted a revised version of your thesis if this was required after the viva, to the satisfaction of your examiners
- received a confirmation of award from Birkbeck Graduate Research School (BGRS).
Students who hold a Student/Tier 4 visa will be restricted to the maximum working hours per week stated in their visa during their studies.
