Birkbeck Science Week shares our world leading research with a wider audience
Science Week
Each year Birkbeck organises a week of free public lectures and related events in the form of Science Week to share internationally recognised research in the areas of science. The Faculty of Science encompasses three schools: Psychological Sciences, Natural Sciences and Computing and Mathematical Sciences.
These events are for anyone interested in science and those who are considering studying science at university. The free science talks can be attended in-person at Birkbeck or attendees can join our global online audience.
In 2025, over four evenings at the beginning of June, the Faculty of Science will host engaging and interactive events:
- Monday 9 June, 6-9pm: School of Psychological Sciences presents Dr Daniel Yon: How The Brain Invents Your Reality - book your place.
- Tuesday 10 June, 6-9pm: School of Natural Sciences presents three talks by prominent researchers: Imaging the invisible: capturing complexity across scales in Natural Science - book your place:
- Professor Charles Underwood: Imagining jaws - looking inside sharks and rays ancient and modern.
- Dr Marianne Odlyha: Making Visible what is Essential for the Preservation of Museum Collections.
- Professor Carolyn Moores: Cool microscopes and studying cellular complexity in health and disease.
- Wednesday 11 June, 6-9pm: School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences presents Dr Felix Reidl: Machine Commands: Society in the Age of AI - book your place.
- Thursday 12 June, 6-9pm: School of Natural Sciences presents: Professor Sanjib Bhakta's Inaugural Lecture: TB or Not TB? The Fight Against Antimicrobial Resistance: Molecules, Machines and Mechanism - book your place.
This year Science Week will also see the awarding of three Science PhD prizes to exceptional early career researchers in each School. Audiences will be treated to an insight into each prize winner's work. These achievements will also be highlighted throughout the evening with posterboard exhibitions and lab tours. Attendees will be able to meet the speakers and prize winners, as well as current faculty staff and students at a drinks reception which will follow each event.
