Overview
Please note: classes for this course run for two and a half hours.
Our Japanese 3 (Level 4) short course introduces you to differing levels of language politeness. With the approximately 400 kanji characters acquired by the end of this course, you will aim to read progressively complex sentence structures and compose messages connected with everyday personal and professional affairs.
By the end of this course, you will be able to:
- express yourself appropriately to complete a variety of tasks, for example, providing explanations, passing on messages, giving recommendations, predictions of future events/outcomes, confirmation information
- demonstrate fluency in increasingly sustained conversational exchanges in everyday situations and on less complex social affairs
- demonstrate awareness of politeness levels, and negotiate the basic structure of these levels with a limited range of vocabulary, expressions and grammar knowledge
- comprehend various communicative exchanges in a range of social and work situations
- understand the gist of some less complex media texts, for example, public announcements and adjusted radio extracts
- understand the gist of a range of texts which you may encounter in everyday life and some work situations
- extract necessary information from a wide range of less complicated and/or adjusted texts in various fields
- formulate messages and express views connected with everyday life and some work situations, with an awareness of appropriate compositional coherence and/or structure, short essays or reports
- read and write approximately 400 .
By the end of the course, you will have acquired JLPT N4 level.*
* Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Please note: this is only an approximate equivalence.
Assessment is via coursework for kanji, grammar and vocabulary (15%), a reading comprehension (20%), a written composition (20%), a final examination including oral test (40%) and class participation (5%).

You are strongly encouraged to contact Dr Michael Tsang for a language placement test. It will then be marked by our native Japanese teachers who will confirm with you which level to enrol on.
You should choose this course:
- if you have previously taken Japanese 2 with us; or
- if you have previously passed JLPT N5 level, or believe that you may have reached this level.
As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.
International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.

How to apply
You register directly onto the classes you would like to take. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis - so apply early. If you wish to take more than one short course, you can select each one separately and then register onto them together via our online application portal. There is usually no formal selection process, although some modules may have prerequisites and/or other requirements, which will be specified where relevant.
