Overview
Please note: classes for this course run for two and a half hours from 6pm to 8.30pm.
Learn how to speak and understand German from beginner level and discover the diversity of cultures in the German-speaking world. You can take German 1 as a short course, or as part of the Certificate of Higher Education in Culture and Language (French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish) or a BA degree.
Our German 1 course is for complete beginners with no previous experience of German and leads to *CEFR A2 (Elementary)/GCSE level. You will learn foundational vocabulary and some basic grammatical structures, enabling you to:
- have everyday conversations
- read and write at a basic level.
You will also learn about the cultures of the German-speaking countries as you learn the language. Classes are interactive and taught by native or near-native speakers.
Assessment is via two pieces of coursework (10%), an in-class listening assessment (40%), in-class oral assessment (20%), in-class written assessment (20%), portfolio (5%) and class participation (5%).
We offer German language courses from beginner to advanced levels so you can continue your journey to a high level of competency.
Some classes can fill up quickly and you are encouraged to enrol as early as possible.

Most of our short courses have no formal entry requirements and are open to all students.
This short course has no prerequisites.
As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.
International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.

How to apply
How to apply
You register directly onto the classes you would like to take. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis - so apply early. If you wish to take more than one short course, you can select each one separately and then register onto them together via our online application portal. There is usually no formal selection process, although some modules may have prerequisites and/or other requirements, which will be specified where relevant.
