Overview
Please note: classes for this course run for two and a half hours.
Japanese 1 is ideal for students with little or no knowledge of Japanese. This course provides you with the fundamental grammar, basic skills and conversation practice to be able to express yourself in a variety of social situations, including for travel in Japan. You will study present and past tenses and learn the meaning of simple requests, statements and questions in everyday situations. You will learn the Hiragana and Katakana scripts and around 80 kanji (Chinese characters). You will also learn about the culture and society of Japan. Classes are interactive and taught by native speakers. By the end of the course, you will reach about 50-60% of the beginner N5 level of the JLPT*.
Assessment is via two pieces of coursework (15%), a reading comprehension (20%), a writing composition (20%), a final examination including oral test (40%), and class attendance and participation (5%)

Most of our short courses have no formal entry requirements and are open to all students.
This short course has no prerequisites.
As part of the enrolment process, you may be required to submit a copy of a suitable form of ID.
International students who wish to come to the UK to study a short course can apply for a Visitor visa. Please note that it is not possible to obtain a Student visa to study a short course.

How to apply
You register directly onto the classes you would like to take. Classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis - so apply early. If you wish to take more than one short course, you can select each one separately and then register onto them together via our online application portal. There is usually no formal selection process, although some modules may have prerequisites and/or other requirements, which will be specified where relevant.
