Overview

Our fascinating short course, Writing London, introduces you to fictions about London.

We will look at seven novels and three plays, seeking to read them in their historical contexts. We begin with a contemporary novel of London, then progress chronologically from Shakespeare to the present. You will learn how to use different types of material, including literary, critical, historical and visual, to elucidate the primary material.

By the end of this short course, you will have used conceptual, historical and formal frameworks to understand literature representing the city of London.

Assessment on this course is via an in-class test (50%) and 1500-word essay (50%).
