Overview

Our Corporate Finance short course will help you gain a thorough understanding of the foundations of modern corporate finance with applications to business decisions. It offers both theoretical knowledge as well as hands-on practical exercises.

We begin by re-examining the basic pricing and valuation principles from the perspective of a firm’s financial manager. We discuss how to evaluate investment projects using the net present value criterion. We then consider investments in a risk-free world and extend our analysis to when risk considerations are necessary.

We then turn our attention to the core concepts of corporate finance and the controversies surrounding the irrelevance of dividend and debt policies. We focus on the principal-agent conflicts that impact a firm’s optimal decisions. We also look at options - financial and real - and finish the course by addressing very specific topics of corporate finance: mergers and acquisitions as well as working capital management.

As part of the course, you will also undertake a ‘Company Challenge’ analysing a company of your choice with the knowledge and skills developed during the course.

Assessment for this course consists of a mid-term test (20%), coursework (10%) and a written examination (70%).
