Overview

Our Art in London short course offers you a unique and exciting opportunity to explore the vibrant art scene of London through a series of site visits and workshops. This course is non-credit bearing, and participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance upon completion.

This course is designed to encourage critical thinking about where and how art is displayed. You will visit six museums, galleries or sites in London to explore diverse museum architectures, exhibitions and interpretations. You will also examine art in unexpected spaces, such as train stations, parks, city squares, corporate headquarters, churches and historic houses.

Site visits may include:

  • the British Museum
  • Tate Modern
  • St Paul’s Cathedral
  • King’s Cross Station
  • the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.

These visits are complemented by interactive workshops, where you will collaborate with other students to critically reflect on themes such as location, institutions, place and curation.

You will benefit from sharing your perspectives with a diverse group of Birkbeck students with different backgrounds and experiences on this course, including those studying it as a module for credit towards a qualification.

Although you will complete the same assessments as our other students, including one co-written and two sole-authored blogs (500 words each) for potential publication online, these will not be graded for this non-credit-bearing course.

This course is non-credit bearing, so carries no credit points.
