Module description
In this module we introduce you to key mathematical ideas and concepts which you may encounter in everyday life, but more specifically in business and management scenarios. Concepts covered include percentage change, probability, logarithms; graphical representation of data; sales, profits and key performance indicators.
You will gain the basic mathematics skills and understanding you need to study a range of business, economics, accounting and management modules during your undergraduate degree at Birkbeck.

- Basic arithmetic; fractions and percentages
- Probability and data
- Basic algebra
- Graphs in business and management
- Linear equations
- Quadratic equations
- Simultaneous equations
- Differentiation and introduction to optimisation
- Logarithms
Learning objectives
By the end of this module, you will:
- feel comfortable with a range of mathematical tools and concepts
- understand basic mathematical tools and concepts that will be useful in later management, accounting and economics modules
- no longer be afraid of mathematical concepts and ideas, whether applied to issues in everyday life, your academic studies or management in organisations
- understand how mathematical concepts relate to real issues in business, management and economics.
