Masters Research Project (Criminology)

Overview

  • Credit value: 30 credits at Level 7
  • Convenor: Gill Hunter (Senior Research Fellow, Institute for Crime and Justice Policy Research)
  • Assessment: a 1000-word research project proposal (10%) and an 8000-word project (90%)

Module description

In this module, you will have an opportunity to complete a research project on a topic of your choice according to your interests and your future objectives and plans. You will be guided through the process of choosing an appropriate topic, building a research project proposal for submission, developing the skills and knowledge required to carry out a project of this size and scope, engaging with the supervision process and completing the research project for submission.

Topics will be agreed with the module convenor in the spring term, and you will engage with a supervisor and produce a thesis over the summer term using and building upon the academic skills you have developed during the course.

Learning objectives

On completion of the project, you will have:

  • demonstrated a deep and nuanced understanding of a specific topic within the field of criminology
  • demonstrated a critical understanding of key theoretical and applied literatures pertinent to your topic
  • illustrated academic planning, writing, critical reading and discussion skills
  • produced a well-structured and substantiated piece of writing
  • demonstrated a capacity for self-directed study and critical reflection
  • demonstrated confidence in the subject-specific, intellectual and practical learning outcomes personally achieved.
