Overview
- Credit value: 15 credits at Level 7
- Convenor: Professor Matthew Longo
- Assessment: two 1000-1500-word essays
Module description
In this module you will learn how lesion approaches can be used to advance the field of cognitive neuroscience. A series of case demonstrations will be given, each of a patient with a circumscribed brain lesion and associated functional deficit. Theoretical issues surrounding neuropsychological data, and how to use magnetic resonance imaging to characterise structural and functional aspects of brain lesions, will be discussed.
We will also consider 'virtual lesions', brought about by transcranial magnetic and direct current stimulation, and explore the practical, theoretical and methodological aspects of this technique. We will discuss lesion techniques in humans alongside work using animal models.
