Computational Approaches to Mind
Overview
- Credit value: 15 credits at Level 7
- Convenor: Dr Raffaele Tucciarelli
- Assessment: a written essay (100%)
Module description
In this module we present in detail the main computational modelling paradigms in cognitive science. There will be three sessions on each of:
- connectionism
- symbolic approaches to cognition
- logic and inference
and one session on:
- mathematical models (emphasising the distinction between process and normative models).
Learning objectives
By the end of this module, you will be:
- familiar with a number of computational approaches to cognition
- able to describe the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches
- able to generate arguments for and against the different approaches in different domains.
