Computational Approaches to Mind

In this module we present in detail the main computational modelling paradigms in cognitive science. There will be three sessions on each of:

• connectionism
• symbolic approaches to cognition
• logic and inference

and one session on:

• mathematical models (emphasising the distinction between process and normative models).

By the end of this module, you will be:

• familiar with a number of computational approaches to cognition
• able to describe the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches
• able to generate arguments for and against the different approaches in different domains.
