Preparation for BSc Research Project

• Credit value: 15 credits at Level 5
• Convenor: Professor James Hammond
• Assessment: a project proposal presentation (10%), 1000-word project proposal (20%) and 3000-word literature review (70%)

This module will help you develop your skills as a scientist. In the lectures you will be offered guidance on scientific method, how to search and read scientific papers and summarise the results in reports. You will also have the chance to practise your presentation skills. Outside of lectures, you will work with your chosen project supervisor to develop your final-year project and produce a literature review.

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• demonstrate an in-depth understanding of one aspect of Earth and planetary science related to your chosen project
• develop a clear proposal outlining your plan for future study
• read, understand and synthesise academic literature
• communicate ideas both orally and in writing.
