Development of Professional Attitude (Children and Adolescents)

Module description
This module aims to develop your:
- capacity for self-knowledge and self-reflection, especially an understanding of one’s inner world and how this impacts on others
- awareness of transference/countertransference phenomenon and its impact of counselling/therapy work
- capacity for ethical and professional thinking and practice as a psychodynamic counsellor/therapist
- psychological/emotional maturity to demonstrate 'readiness for clinical placement'.
This is a practical module where teaching methods are experientially based. There are weekly experiental groups and twice-termly large groups. In addition, you will take part in weekly personal therapy, which is key in professional growth. You will 'become' a client, experiencing at first hand how therapy works, and in so doing develop a capacity for self-knowledge and self-reflection. Through this ‘modelling’ you also experience at first hand technical issues which are integrated into the topics of study.
Learning objectives
By the end of this module, you will have:
- skills in thinking psychodynamically about counselling/therapy issues, and making professional communications about counselling/therapy work
- developed the capacity for self-reflection, especially knowledge of one’s inner world and how it impacts on counselling/therapy work, and one’s role in groups and institutions
- developed the capacity for professional and ethical thinking in counselling/therapy.
