This lecture is about public art as public politics, beyond borders.
Creative occupations of space blur the lines between politics and performance. Like the event of politics, the artistic event can rupture the everyday banalities of common sense consumer capitalism. The ability of everyday people to create art within the public sphere is an expression of the resilience and tenacity of the political spirit globally. Dr Atluri will discuss uses of political theatre in the Indian subcontinent, transnational traditions of feminist performance art, and the staging of protests as artistic acts. She will draw on research done in India that focused on the large protests that followed the 2012 Delhi gang rape case and 2013 Supreme Court of India decision to criminalize same sex desire.
Tara Atluri is a lecturer at the Ontario College of Art and Design University and is a Visiting Fellow at the Birkbeck Institute for the Humanities and GEDS, Birkbeck, University of London (January - March 2016). Her current research interests include sexualities and urban space in India and she has recently published Ä€zÄdÄ«: Sexual Politics and Postcolonial Worlds (Demeter Press, 2016)
