Slavoj Žižek - THE FUTURE OF HEGEL, THE FUTURE IN HEGEL
In the predominant liberal-democratic interpretation, Hegel is presented as a philosopher who – in a speculative way – announces a new age of trust in which modern alienation will be overcome and social life will be grounded in mutual recognition. In contrast to this reading (exemplified in the works of Robert Brandom, Judith Butler, etc.), it will be demonstrated that Hegel is the ultimate thinker of DISTRUST, a thinker who –apropos of every emancipatory project – discerns its potentials for new forms of violence and domination.
It is precisely this distrust which makes Hegel a thinker who is open to the future in all its unpredictability.
This is a masterclass held over two days. You should buy a ticket for each individual day. If you are a Birkbeck student, please contact bih@bbk.ac.uk for a concessionary place.
