MA Cities Soft Launch

Venue: Birkbeck Main Building, Malet Street

Historically, cities are spaces where struggles for gender equality and female empowerment have emerged, pushing successfully for progress across the world. Nevertheless, urban spaces are also reproduced by enduring patriarchal norms and shaped by gendered, classed and racial inequalities. Ultimately, the alarming and persistent levels of gender-based violence around the urban world demonstrate the need for 'en-gendering' research protocols and practices of city-making. This panel will thus contribute to this task by exploring the multiple ways in which urban spaces shape (and are shaped by) a gendered society, across space and time.
