Birkbeck Inspires: How might we recognise the value of homecare provision

Birkbeck has launched a new programme, 'Birkbeck Inspires', a free online events, activities and resources programme designed to inspire learning, provoke thought, and entertain and excite curious minds.
COVID-19 has highlighted the value and importance of care workers, historically a poorly paid and undervalued profession. Dr Kerry Harman, Programme Director of Higher Education Introductory Studies, will be leading the event, which will provide an overview of challenges experienced by homecare workers as well as an introduction to current research and strategies in the UK for recognising the value of care.
As well as short talks by invited speakers, there will be a question and answer session, providing participants with the opportunity to ask questions and contribute to current discussion on how, as a society, we might start taking seriously the importance of ‘good’ care’?
The guest speakers are:
–Professor Ed Heerey, Professor of Employment Relations at Cardiff Business School who works closely with the Living Wage Foundation to provide data on the Adult Social Care sector
–Emily Roe, Campaign Manager at the Living Wage Foundation
–Caroline Weimer, homecare worker with over 20 years experience working in the Adult Social Care sector in London
-Professor Lydia Hayes, Professor of Law at the University of Kent and author of ‘Professionalisation at work in adult social care’ prepared for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Adult Social Care, July 2019
