Years ago Charles Clover proudly caught his first salmon: twenty-three pounds. Later as a journalist it occurred to him to investigate an anomaly in reported fish stocks around the world.
Industrial trawlers scoop everything out of the sea across swathes of ocean. Imagine the same thing happening on land: every living creature bigger than a bug would be dead within the catch zone, with the corpses of the unwanted animals tossed back and left to rot. We wouldn't tolerate it. But in the ocean such damage is out of sight and out of mind.
Clover found that fish stocks were in widespread decline and that in some areas they'd already collapsed. So far as ocean-fishing went, we were virtually at the end of the line. We'd either change our ways, or the fish would be gone. Clover's pride in catching his hefty salmon gave way to guilt.
The End of the Line is Rupert Murray's film based on Clover's 2006 book. In revisiting the film now, we'll consider whether we've learned or changed in the seven years since the film appeared.
