The Birkbeck Centre for British Political Life presents an Autumn Masterclass ‘Food Democracy in a Time of Covid & Brexit Disruption’.
The event will be held with Professor Tim Lang, Centre for Food Policy, City University of London and author of Feeding Britain: Our Food Problems and How to Fix Them
Professor Alex Colas, Programme Director MSc Food, Politics and Society, Birkbeck will chair the event.
British food has changed remarkably in the last half century. As we have become wealthier and more discerning, our food has Europeanized (pizza is children’s favourite food) and internationalized (we eat the world’s cuisines). Yet our food culture remains fragmented, a mix of mass ‘ultra-processed’ substances alongside food as varied and good as anywhere else on the planet.
Drawing on his recent book ‘Feeding Britain’, Professor Lang will address the contemporary politics of food in Britain, arguing that Covid-19 has compounded the Brexit vote into forcing us to radically transform the existing food system.
This event is supported by the Birkbeck Centre for British Political Life and the Birkbeck Institute for Social Research
