Marie Langer's life encapsulates one of the great struggles of the mind of the twentieth century. Born in Vienna, and a participant in the Spanish Civil War, Langer brought the critical tools of psychoanalysis to the social and individual problems of her time in Latin America, in particular Argentina, Mexico and Nicaragua. This documentary combines archive footage with a narrative woven from interviews with those who knew her and those who followed in her footsteps. It was made as part of Birkbeck's Hidden Persuaders project, supported by the Wellcome Trust.
The event is co-hosted by CILAVS and will consist of a discussion of the film in a Latin American context, including the politics of health and the activism of exiles. The discussion will be chaired by Professor Luciana Martins, with Dr Jasmine Gideon, Professor Oscar Guardiola-Rivera and Dr Lily Ford.
