Abstract
The debate on AI has long been bogged down in abstract discussions about the theory of mind, consciousness and ethics. This has sometimes impeded real innovation. It’s time to get down to business. Today we are seeing companies applying AI in ways that become practical and useful. Our two speakers exemplify the attempts to house-train AI and de-risk it to the point that investors, founders, managers and researchers can at least know where to look for solutions and recognise good quality when they see AI applied in the real world.
Biographies
Charles Radclyffe is co-founder of EthicsGrade who positions AI in a broader context of ESG investing and digital values. He will describe how his new company provides an index for investors evaluating the ESG, and the governance of AI. He will explain how this must drill down into the operational measures that the company uses to run the business, and these are best set up at the very foundation of a company. Charles is currently a Forbes contributing writer and is a Visiting Fellow of the University of Bristol.
Riham Satti, co-founder of award winning startup MeVitae and former neuro-science researcher, who with her team has been developing AI solutions to removing tacit bias in recruitment. Riham’s research shows how bias can extend all the way to how the job is advertised and CVs are screened. Given the wider concerns about social justice and inclusion, MeVitae addresses a vital issue of public concern.
Jo Magnani is an Alumna of Birkbeck, London University with an MSc (Distinction) in Business Innovation with EBusiness; with four decades' experience and exposure of Telecommunications technology working in the Finance, Fintech, Manufacturing and Logistics Industries. She has worked as a Solutions Architect designing voice and data networks and latterly as a Senior Client Partner for a world-renowned global Solutions Provider.
Andrew Atter is currently an Innovation Coach at the University of Liverpool, on an ERDF-funded LCR Founders Project being run jointly with Liverpool John Moore’s University. Previously, Andrew ran his own ed-tech firm, Pivomo, for 6 years, which provided founders, start up teams & mentors with online psychometric tools, educational gaming and e-learning programmes.
Andrew was Entrepreneur-in-residence at Birkbeck between 2012-14 and has been a CIMR Visiting Fellow since. Andrew received his professional doctorate in 2016 from Middlesex University. Andrew has previously set up and run businesses in Asia, Eastern Europe and the UK. He is also an accredited executive coach with the EMCC.
