The Centre for Medieval and Early Modern Worlds is pleased to host a launch and celebration of Professor Anthony Bale's new book, 'Margery Kempe: A Mixed Life' (Reaktion, 2021). The event will feature a talk by Professor Bale (Birkbeck, University of London) followed by a short reading from the book; this will be followed by a response from Dr Laura Kalas (Swansea University). There will also be an opportunity for attendees to contribute and ask questions.

  • Dr Laura Kalas -

    Dr Laura Kalas is Senior Lecturer in Medieval Literature and co-director of the Medical Humanities Research Centre at Swansea University. She has published widely on female mysticism in the later Middle Ages, and her most recent book is 'Margery Kempe’s Spiritual Medicine: Suffering, Transformation and the Life Course' (Cambridge: D.S.Brewer, 2020).

  • Prof Anthony Bale -

    Anthony Bale is professor of medieval studies and, until recently, Executive Dean of the School of Arts at Birkbeck, University of London. He has published widely in academic journals and learned presses on late medieval literary culture. His translation of 'The Book of Margery Kempe' is published in the World's Classics Series at Oxford University Press (2015). His most recent book, 'Margery Kempe: A Mixed Life', will be available from October 2021.
