The video game sector has employed artificial intelligence techniques since the late 1990s in an effort to more craft non-player characters and interactive experiences. But what impact, if any, are the major trends in deep learning having on the sector today? This talk gives an overview of the historic influences of AI in games, the unique challenges the sector faces and how academic and corporate research in machine learning is impacting game productions in ways not previously envisaged.

    Having received his PhD in Computer Science from the University of Strathclyde in 2010, Tommy has taught Computer Science and video game development at several UK universities since 2012, with over 50 peer-reviewed publications in artificial intelligence for video games in areas such as non-player character control, procedural content generation and video game design. He is currently a lecturer at the Department of Informatics at King's College London. Outside of academia, Tommy is the director of AI and Games, a consultancy business based in the UK that supports the research and development of AI for video games. His work at AI and Games is more widely known on YouTube, in which he works as a science communicator for video game fans and developers.
