We introduce a series of workshops as part of the Grant Success initiative of BEI.


In this session, chaired by Dr Hubie Chen (Dept. of Computer Science), we will discuss the pathways for successful interdisciplinary grants. We will welcome Prof Fiona Candlin (Dept. of History of Art) and Prof Peter Wood (Dept. of Computer Science), who will present their experience with interdisciplinary grants; their presentations will be followed by a Q&A session.


Topics covered will include, among others:
- Initiating and finding partners for interdisciplinary grants
- Sources of interdisciplinary grant calls
- Writing interdisciplinary grant applications
- Particular challenges/issues one should be aware of in writing an interdisciplinary grant proposal and how to overcome these

Speaker Bios:

Fiona Candlin is Professor of Museology in the History of Art department, Birkbeck and P.I. on two large multi-disciplinary grants – ‘Mapping Museums: The history and geography of the sector 1960-2020’, and ‘UK Museums in the Pandemic: Risk, resilience and closure’. Her most recent book, Stories from Small Museums (Manchester University Press) is coming out later this year.

Peter Wood is Professor of Computer Science at Birkbeck. His current research involves issues related to querying graph and semantic web data. He is co-investigator on two multi-disciplinary grants: 'UK Museums in the Pandemic: Risk, resilience and closure' and 'GCRF Action against Stunting Hub'.

Hubie Chen is Lecturer of Computer Science at Birkbeck. He is presently principal investigator of an ESPRC grant which focuses on the computational complexity of database query evaluation.
