Interest in applying computational tools to questions in the social sciences and humanities has grown steadily in recent years. New research groups and workshops in overlapping subfields such as digital humanities, computational humanities, and computational social science have emerged, showcasing the interdisciplinary opportunities and methodological challenges that arise in these areas. I will begin this talk by giving a general overview of these subfields, with particular attention to applications of natural language processing (NLP), including my own core research which aims to produce interpretable models and visualisations of lexical semantics. Then, I will present work in progress from a collaborative project that uses NLP to discover and highlight patterns in a corpus of 17th Century French pharmaceutical recipe books.

Dr Paul Nulty

Dr Paul Nulty is a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at Birkbeck, University of London. He received his PhD in Computational Linguistics from University College Dublin in 2013. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher on projects in political methodology and digital humanities at LSE and Cambridge University. Before joining Birkbeck as a lecturer in 2021, he was a Marie Curie/Enterprise Ireland research fellow at CeADAR, UCD. His research focus is on applying natural language processing and data visualisation methods to questions in the social sciences and humanities.
