Join us for an online guided tour of the Bayeux Tapestry through discussion between Professor Michael Lewis and Dr Mike Bintley, taking in the major events, people, and scenes depicted in this extraordinary survival from post-Conquest medieval England. This event will introduce you to some of the debates surrounding the origins of the tapestry and its production, and ask what it both reveals and obscures about the events of 1066 and the world in which it was produced. How did this shape the tapestry, and might did the tapestry, in turn, have shaped the world in the eyes of its viewers?

Professor Michael Lewis is Head of Portable Antiquities and Treasure at the British Museum, and a leading expert on the Bayeux Tapestry. His book The Story of the Bayeux Tapestry, co-authored with David Musgrove, was published in 2021, and he has also written and edited several volumes on the tapestry, including The Real World of the Bayeux Tapestry (2008) and The Bayeux Tapestry: New Approaches (2011).

Dr Mike Bintley is Senior Lecturer in Early Medieval Literature and Culture at Birkbeck, and has a keen interest in the intersection between texts and archaeology. His book publications include Trees in the Religions of Early Medieval England (2015) and Settlements and Strongholds in Early Medieval England: Texts, Landscapes, and Material Culture (2020).
