Demonstration of Kalaripayattu, a martial art for the battlefield and how it symbolises the cycle of human physiological growth, through a presentation and live Q&A session. Online.

The term Kalaripayattu denotes the practice of martial art for the Battlefield, and hails from the southern part of the Indian sub-continent Kerala. Its holistic framework has initiated the traditional schools (Gurukullam) to showcase the art form in a different light. The five phases in kalaripayattu (Meithari, Kolthari, Angathari, Verumkai) symbolize the cycle of human physiological growth (Baliyam/ Kowmaram/Yavanam/ Vardhkiyam/Nishwanam).

This video demonstration will begin by explaining the different phases of Kalaripayattu, along with traditions and rituals followed inside the Kalari before an individual begins the training. It will then be followed by describing various body and animal movements. Further, the artists will demonstrate sword fights, wooden sticks, and bare hand moves. The artists will also demonstrate defense sequences to protect themselves at times of crisis. The video presentation will be followed by a live Q&A session with the artists.

The session will be led by arts producer Krishnapriya Ramamoorthy.
