People can be physically separated from one another, but still remain part of a caring relationship. Many of us were reminded of this during the enforced separation of Covid-19 ‘lockdowns’.  Migrants, in particular, are often separated from their families but continue to care for them at a distance – while sometimes also providing paid care for others, in their destination countries. However, care-related policies often take a simple view of care which ignores these real-life complexities.

In the context of the ongoing global care crisis, this film screening and discussion will explore the relationships between distance, separation, and care. The film ‘Together Apart’ (dir. Maren Wickwire, 2018, 57 mins) follows the story of two indigenous women from the Philippines as they leave their children behind to work in Europe.

After the film there will be an opportunity to ask questions and share reflections with the director Maren Wickwire, and with representatives of the Filipino Domestic Workers Association, a group led for and by Filipino domestic workers, and Kanlungan, a charity serving the Filipino migrant community in the UK. We would love to hearyour own views and experiences of giving and receiving care too, whether at a distance or in close proximity.

This event will take place in the cinema. Refreshments provided, and all are welcome! Free to attend but please register in advance.
