A seminar as part of the Birkbeck Sport Business Centre Public Seminar Series.

Given by: Alex Fynn.

Synopsis

Alex Fynn, as a Director of Saatchi & Saatchi, helped produce the first advertising campaign for a football club for Tottenham Hotspur back in the 1980s. In the 1990s he advised Arsenal on advertising and the Premier League.

In this presentation, he will examine the past, present and futures of Arsenal FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC.  He will underline the vital importance of the concept of the brand and argue that both clubs are not yet exploiting the value of their respective brands to the full.  From his own first hand experience, he will discuss the respective contributions of Irving Scholar, Terry Venables, Alan Sugar and Daniel Levy at Tottenham, and David Dein, Arsene Wenger, Peter Hill-Wood and Ivan Gazidis at Arsenal, and George Graham at both clubs.

He will argue that by their own very high standards Arsenal’s progress has  slowed, while Tottenham stand at the crossroads. He will suggest that current indications are that there is a danger that both clubs may not fully utilise their considerable potential both on and off the field. However, he will conclude by suggesting ways and means of how this potential could be better realised.
