Please join us for the first Birkbeck Equality and Diversity event to centre and celebrate the crucial work of Birkbeck staff diversity networks.
The event is organised by the Assistant Deans for Equalities in conjuction with Birkbeck's five staff diversity networks:
- Astrea - Birkbeck's grassroots network for women, transgender and non-binary people in professional and support roles.
- REACH - The Race, Ethnicity and Cultural Heritage (REACH) network is open to Birkbeck staff members from underrepresented ethnically diverse (UED) backgrounds, from across professional services and academic schools
- Staff Disability Network - The Staff Disability Network is an inclusive forum for disabled and non-disabled staff members. It provides a supportive environment in which to share experiences, to advocate for disability rights and recognition, and to discuss issues related to disability.
- OUT@BKK - OUT@BBK is the Birkbeck staff network for those who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender as well as other sexual and gender identities.
- Parents Network - The Birkbeck Parents Network was set up by and for colleagues from both academic and professional services to support Birkbeck parents through the joys, challenges and complexities of parenting.
The event programme is as follows:
Session 1:
"Staff voices in influencing equality and diversity policy and practice in organisations"
- Keynote presentation with Dr. Joyce Mamode (Birkbeck, University of London and Queen Mary, University of London)
Session 2:
"Celebrating Birkbeck's staff networks as equality and diversity advocates"
- Staff panel discussion with REACH, Astrea, Staff Disability Network, Parents Network, Out@BBK, and Dr. Joyce Mamode.
Session 1 synoposis:
Dr. Joyce Mamode will share research evidence and practical insights drawn from her research on employee-influenced progressive change in organisations, with a particular focus on the role of employee and other stakeholder voices in influencing equality policy and practice in organisations. Her PhD research examined the contribution being made by trade union equality representatives to union modernisation.
Joyce holds a PhD from Warwick Business School, an MSc in Occupational Psychology, from Birkbeck (University of London) and a BSc in Psychology (Newcastle University). Joyce is an Associate Tutor at Birkbeck and a post-doctoral researcher working on an ESRC funded project 'Buying Social Justice through Procurement', based at Queen Mary, University of London. Prior to taking up this research position in November 2021, Joyce was the Head of Assisted Transport for Transport for London (TfL), responsible for developing new strategic approaches to transport provision for older and disabled Londoners, who face barriers to using public transport. Before joining TfL, initially as an inaugural member of the TfL Board, Joyce was a researcher for a major trade union (the Transport and General Workers' Union, now part of Unite).
