Synopsis

At a time when sports governance is in crisis all over the world, there are repeated calls for tougher regulation and monitoring of sports bodies. Sure enough, governance frameworks are being introduced or revised at every level. However, experience from other sectors suggests that, while improved regulations can help raise minimum standards, rules are always imperfect and people try to find ways around them. Despite the introduction of new legislation in recent years in financial services, for instance, trust in the industry is lower than ever. In this presentation sports governance consultant Rowland Jack will argue that regulation in the sport sector should therefore be accompanied by work to address behaviour and organisational culture – once memorably defined as “the way we do things round here”.

Rowland will argue that whilst understanding of organisational culture and behaviour in sport organisations is developing, it is still at an early stage. There are interesting examples of relevant research and tools from other sectors which could be applicable to sport. Tackling organisational culture is not an easy task but it may well be the next performance frontier for sports governance.
