Given by: Dr Seamus Kelly,  University College Dublin.

In this presentation Dr Seamus Kelly explores the complexity of the path to becoming, and remaining, a professional football manager. in an ultimate results-based industry. Professional football managers are the subject of considerable scrutiny from industry stakeholders such as media and fans concerning team selection, style of play and player recruitment strategies in particular. More recently, managers are faced with a working environment epitomized by interference from owners and directors and are viewed as marketable assets and commodities that are bought, sold and discarded by clubs and their owners once their managerial value dissipates. In this presentation, drawing from research from his book The Role of the Contemporary Professional Football Manager. (2017, Routledge). Dr Kelly will explore how the role of trust assists in understanding how professional football managers deal with the chronic insecurity, vulnerability, rejection and psychological fear of failure that are definitive features of their professional lives.
