Who is this workshop for?
This workshop is aimed at women and underrepresented genders in sport and/or technology. It would be helpful for participants to be familiar with football, especially at elite-level and England-centric. No coding experience is required, but you will need basic computing skills in order to try out the workshop code content.
Workshop synopsis
This free workshop, run by the Sports Python educational project funded by a grant from the EuroPython Society, will introduce participants to practical applications of coding within the Sports industry. The focus will be on applying Python, a powerful programming language, and best-in-class Python software for data science, to real football use-cases from both on and off the pitch.
Using open educational resources developed by the Sports Python project and industry-standard technology (Jupyter, numpy, pandas, matplotlib, seaborn), participants will receive step-by-step coding instructions for executing modern computational workflows that generate the types of familiar Football Analytics published by mainstream media, as well as data-driven insights that support commercial decision-making.
Objectives/outcomes
Workshop participants will gain greater vocational understanding of and practical skills in Python programming for the sports industry, especially for example data analytics and science activities that are important not just to the business of sports today, but highly in-demand and transferable to a host of other industries.
