Join Birkbeck's linguistics team for this taster session to find out more about the vibrant and changing world of London’s languages – and Birkbeck's BA degree in English and/with Linguistics. This taster session will focus on the ways in which different ways of speaking observed among Londoners vary across time and space, in different social groups and settings, in online and offline encounters. Referring to key sociolinguistic projects conducted in the city in recent years, we will explore how the focus on linguistic differences in a multicultural city of London may help us understand the multilingual dynamics of the contemporary globalised world and selected principles of the global linguistic citizenship.
