Join us for a roundtable discussion on the erection and toppling of statues and related issues associated with public commemoration that looks beyond the British Empire and the American Civil War, to Modern China, Ancient Rome, and still other times and places. Moderator Julia Laite of Birkbeck College will be joined by Mary Beard, a Professor at Cambridge and author of multiple books on the Roman Empire; Jeffrey Wasserstrom, a China specialist based in California who is spending the spring as a Leverhulme Visiting Professor at Birkbeck College; Toby Lichtig, a TLS editor and freelance cultural critic whose publications include an essay on Holocaust memorials; and Dr. Renie Chow Choy, Community Engagement Manager for Collections at St Paul’s Cathedral and Associate Lecturer of Church History at Westcott House.
