The Old Price Riots Project
When:
—
Venue:
Birkbeck 43 Gordon Square
Workshop performance exploring the question: does anyone still consider access to theatre to be a right worth fighting for?
It’s 1809, and the rebuilt Covent Garden Theatre – its predecessor destroyed by fire – re-opens with much higher ticket prices, and private boxes for the rich. Audiences protest, triggering the biggest riots in British theatre history.
It’s 2023, and resentment simmers about sky-high prices for West End – and subsidised – theatre.
But does anyone still consider access to theatre to be a right worth fighting for? With a government trying to criminalise legitimate protest, what *would* make us take to the barricades?
This workshop performance has been created by MA Text and Performance in the context of the module Collaborative Theatre Making.
