Sounding Images

Sonic artist Trevor Mathison is known chiefly for his site-specific explorations with Gary Stewart under the name of Dubmorphology and for his long-time collaborations with artist John Akomfrah. Trevor Mathison's rich, diverse practice as an artist (sound, films, photography, sculpture and drawing) was showcased in his first solo exhibition in 2022, From Signal to Decay: Volume 1 at Goldsmiths CCA in London. This programme brings together a selection of some of his lesser-known collaborations ranging from 1988 - 2022. For Mathison, each partnership is not about providing the sound for particular images. His involvement is more like an opportunity for him and the makers to embark on a joint journey of discovery with no set routes or stopping-off points. The result is a fascinating range of projects by singular artists whose visual approaches are enhanced by sonic collaborations, which open spaces for the imaginative interplay between sound and image.
