Please note that this session is for Birkbeck students only.

  • Do you struggle to write what you’ve read in your own words?
  • Do you tend to ‘copy and paste’ text from readings into your assignment, then change or remove a few words here and there?
  • Are you worried about plagiarism?

If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then you may benefit from attending this workshop.

An important skill in academic writing is the ability to write about things you have read in your own words, either to pick out the main points (summarise) for your own argument or to communicate a specific point made by a writer (paraphrase) as part of your own argument. In this workshop, we’ll review and try out some strategies for paraphrasing that you will be able to use to confidently approach this task in your own note-making and assignments.
