The Birkbeck Sport Business Seminar series commences for the 2023/2024 academic year on Monday 2nd October, 6pm, next where the guest speaker is Daniel Geey, one of Europe’s most influential lawyers in the sport industry.

This event is being organised in collaboration with the Birkbeck Sport Management Society, the student society for Birkbeck sport management students and alumni of the Birkbeck sport management programmes.

Daniel Geey is a partner in the London-based Sheridans, the leading media and technology law firm. The core of Daniel’s professional practice is in the football industry, where he has worked on a variety of club takeovers, high profile transfers, commercial endorsement deals and disputes, most recently representing Declan Rice in his record-breaking transfer from West Ham United to Arsenal. His book, Done Deal: An Insider's Guide to Football Contracts, Multi-Million Pound Transfers and Premier League Big Business (2019), remains one of the most insightful and thought-provoking expositions of the practical realities of how business is done in the football industry.

Birkbeck has been fortunate to have enjoyed a long and fruitful collaboration with Daniel going back nearly twenty years. This collaboration reflects Birkbeck’s and Daniel’s deep commitment to promoting education in the sport sector, and to Daniel’s personal commitment to sharing his own experience with students seeking to pursue a career in this hugely competitive industry on how best to build their professional competencies and profiles in order to build a successful career. In his recently published book Build the Invisible (2023) Daniel has distilled the key lessons in his long and successful career to outline his own personal career philosophy and to show how investing in yourself – building your invisible foundations – leads to a successful and fulfilling career.

In this interactive discussion event Daniel will present an overview of his professional life in sport, discuss what he feels are the big challenges facing the football industry going forward, and offer practical advice to aspiring professionals in the sector about how to draw on their own invisible qualities to build a successful career in the sport and football industries.
