We are pleased to announce the 1st Seminar Series on Governance, Institutions, and Sustainability” jointly hosted by the Centre for Political Economy and Institutional Studies and by the Birkbeck Responsible Business Centre, within the Birkbeck Business School.
In our rapidly evolving world, the intricate web connecting governance, institutions, and sustainability has become increasingly prominent. We invite scholars, researchers, and practitioners to enhance this very important debate and to join us in exploring the profound intertwining of these critical elements at our upcoming seminar series.
Abstract
Given the scarce empirical evidence on the effect of higher food prices on income distribution at the global level, the paper analyses a sample of 126 developed and developing countries observed in the period 1990-2020. More specifically, it estimates the relation of food price shocks with inequality and the income of the poorest shares of population. As results show that food price shocks are associated with increased inequality in developing countries, driven by a decrease in the income of poorest deciles, the paper also explores how multidimensional poverty is affected by price shocks as far as data are available.
